Unique Gift Ideas: Nostalgic Candies of the 1960s

Posted by Candy Lady on 3/1/2014
Certain tastes have the power to transport you back in time. Whether you remember sucking on a Starburst candy during a hot summer day or unwrapping the pink paper from a stick of Teaberry gum, the candies of the 1960s still hold a certain magic and nostalgia. Give someone special a trip down memory lane with an assortment of these nostalgic sweets.

In the 1960s, candy took inspiration from the changing times. Bold fruit flavors stormed the scene with the introduction of Starburst. Sour candies such as SweetTarts and mouth-puckering Lemonheads offered something different than the treats that earlier generations grew up with. Many sweets offered not just new tastes, but novel sensations, including fizzy candies like Zotz and the searing heat of cinnamon Red Hots. The new flavors came in bright colors, and many contained the whole rainbow in one small package, such as Chuckles or candy dots. Candy necklaces and whistle pops mirrored the mysterious world of grown ups and let kids play with their candy as well as eat it. Other treats literally transformed when eaten, such as Razzles, the candy that became gum when chewed. Older brands created hip marketing campaigns to reach the youth. The mild, mint-flavored Teaberry gum was famous for its advertisements, which featured respectable members of society chewing the gum and breaking out in the Teaberry shuffle dance.

Even though you rarely see some of these brands on store shelves, many are available today on the Internet, including Lemonheads, Razzles and Teaberry gum. A collection of these sweets makes a thoughtful gift for your friends and family who lived through the decade or are just big candy enthusiasts.
