Getting Gummis!

Posted by Candy Lady on 2/25/2014
Who hasn't had a gummi candy?!? From gummi bears to every type of gummi insect on the planet, gummi candies have taken the world by storm and people are eating them up!

Believe it or not, the first gummi candies (bears,) originated in the 1920s in Germany.  Made by Hans Riegel, the owner of the German candy company Haribo, it wasn’t until 1982 that Haribo  introduced America to them.  Since that time, Gummi candies have come in a wildly fantastic variety of shapes and sizes and have even been memorialized in the famous Gummi Bear song!  Haribo bears have since long held their place of popularity among American candies.

Dots, Jujubes and Jujufruits are all gummi type candies which many people recall buying exclusively at movie theaters most of all.  All timelessly classic favorites, these candies come in a variety of flavors.

Jelly Belly, long famous for its jelly beans and gummi candies, additionally makes a European style candy, in raspberry and blackberry flavors.  Made of a soft gel, these candies are covered in crunchy candy seeds so they appear to be the actual berries.  Gummi meets crunch. Incidentally, Jelly Belly confections are all Kosher, come in a wide variety of shapes and are available as a sugar free candy.

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, a Swedish confectioner Malaco began producing a couple of products developed specifically for North Americans and were called Swedish Fish and Swedish Berries.  Made in Sweden, those little flat red fish were initially intended to be an exclusively North American treat. Today Swedish Fish are made in both Sweden and Canada and they continue to be a favorite Gummi candy among Gummi connoisseurs.
